Our Rivers.....

Local versus Wilderness

The Wairarapa and wider Wellington Region provides many exciting opportunities to fly fish - or you can go further afield.....

Local

  • Ruamahunga River - we put the raft in from our property located on the river and take out further down also at river level - little walking required
  • Hutt River - easy vehicle access for put in / take out of raft (if raft fishing)
  • Rangitikei River - easy vehicle access for put in / take out of raft (if raft fishing) approximately 2hrs drive from our Wairarapa base
  • Many other local rivers/tributaries and streams are within 1-1 1/2 hours drive from our base

Wilderness

  • Wairarapa/Wellington Rivers - 1 hr drive and various tramps, staying in Huts/fly camps (carry all gear) to fish in almost untouched pools
  • Mohaka River - 4 hr drive from our Wairarapa base with raft for 2 - 3+ days of spectacular fish, views and pools

These rivers are a selection of some of our offerings but there are many more possibilities, so contact us

Ruamahunga River (Grade 1-2)

The Ruamahunga River has 4 raft sections to choose from and is a wide gentle river in the lower sections and provides relaxing rafting and great fishing opportunities.  The fish in the Ruamahunga River can reach trophy size and because of the remoteness of the upper reaches, the fishing is incredible.

Waiohine River (Grade 1-2)

Access to the best fishing is in the upper-middle reaches and is gained by helicopter or tramping. In the lower reaches rafting or walking are the best methods of accessing the river. The fish in the Waiohine River can reach trophy size and because of the remoteness of the upper reaches, the fishing is excellent.

Mohaka River (Grade 2-3)

The Mohaka River is 35mins drive from Napier and provides excellent wilderness rafting and sensational trout fishing. The Grade 2 section of this river stretches for more than 40km's and trips can be run as day trips or multi-day expeditions.

(Can be combined with the Tongariro and /or boat fishing on Lake Taupo - see below). Both big Rainbow and Brown Trout are encountered on this river. The fish are very strong and well conditioned.

Tongariro River (Grade 2)

The Tongariro River is famous for its big, hard fighting trout and sensational rafting. The Grade 2 section of this river flows past the Turangi township and is great for families and fishermen.

(Can be combined with boat fishing on Lake Taupo - see below)

Hutt River (Grade 1-2)

The Hutt River flows past Upper Hutt City. Most of the rapids on this section are Grade 1 with a few Grade 2 rapids. There is pleasant scenery along the way and good trout fishing opportunities. Predominantly Brown Trout, ranging in size from 1 - 3kg. Trout numbers are usually very good in the Hutt River.

Ngaruroro

The Ngaruroro River has some of the most spectacular scenery New Zealand has to offer. Crystal clear pools and huge fish are a highlight of this river. Trophy fish can be found in this river system and the summer-time Cicada fishing is incredible. Nymphing the deep pools and runs can produce many hook-up's in a day's fishing.
Lake Taupo (by boat)

We can also provide the option of multi-day fishing/raft fishing on the Tongariro River PLUS time on the lake if conditions are suitable. We use a 4.9m Buccaneer boat (pictured) that is excellent for lake fishing.
